Short answer: No.
The longer answer is a bit more complicated.
When researching marine hardware, you’ll often hear that stainless steel is rust-resistant and stronger than zinc-plated hardware. Because of that, many assume stainless steel is the best choice for dock hardware.
But there’s an important factor to consider: galvanic corrosion.

Stainless Steel and Aluminum
When stainless steel hardware comes into contact with aluminum, galvanic corrosion can occur. These two metals react with each other, especially in wet environments.
In this reaction, aluminum is the weaker metal, meaning it will corrode first. Stainless steel hardware can also bind or seize when installed in aluminum components, making it difficult to remove later.

Why This Matters
Corrosion is more than a cosmetic issue—it can affect structural integrity.
Constant exposure to water and weather speeds up corrosion, especially in saltwater conditions. When aluminum dock frames are involved, protecting the structure becomes critical.
Still want stainless hardware on your dock? If you insisted on adding stainless steel to your aluminum dock, say in saltwater conditions, you will need to separate the aluminum from your steel by adding a custom plastic washer, rubberized undercoating, or electrochemical galvanizing spray.
A failing frame is a much bigger problem than a failing bolt.

Zinc-Plated Hardware
Lower-grade zinc plating can rust quickly, which is why it’s not ideal for dock hardware.
However, Grade-8 zinc-plated hardware offers strong corrosion resistance and high tensile strength—up to 150,000 PSI, similar to many stainless steel fasteners.
Because of this strength and compatibility with aluminum, Grade-8 zinc-plated hardware is commonly used in demanding outdoor applications.
